When a biopsy or surgical specimen is received in Pathology it is only accepted if the appropriate paperwork for patient identification and source of specimen is also received. The tissue is then assigned a Surgical Pathology case number and given to one of our residents or pathology assistant to “gross in”. “Gross” Pathology refers to the process of identifying, measuring and accurately describing the tissue as you can see it with the naked eye, without a microscope.
