Updates In Flow Cytometry At ORHS

Date: January 6, 2006

Our flow cytometry laboratory currently processes over 800 cases per year. The laboratory was recently updated with new instrumentation and software in order to provide the most efficient turn-around-time and accurate diagnoses for our patients. Specimens are analyzed 7 days per week, including weekends and holidays. This ensures the best possible patient care with results available in less than 24 hours for most cases. On-call technicians and pathologists are also available for stat cases after hours. When indicated, results can be called to the ordering physician by a pathologist within several hours of specimen receipt in the laboratory.

Specimens accepted for processing include bone marrow aspirates, peripheral blood, body fluids, CSF and tissue. In addition, lymphocyte subset analysis from peripheral blood specimens is performed daily.

We have also expanded our current test panels, adding several more antibodies, such as CD52, and additional screening tests. Our new expanded panels include:

  • PNH
  • Erythroid and megakaryocytic AML's
  • Mast cell disease
  • "Live gating" for detection of minimal residual disease

Current laboratory hours are:
Monday-Friday 7:30am - 7:30pm
Weekends and Holidays 7:00am - 3:30pm

Contact the laboratory directly at 321-841-5466 for all stat cases or for any cases requiring next day interpretation on a weekend or holiday. Dr. Stephanie Schreiner is also available at 321-841-5217 (office) or 407-981-1222 (pager) for specific requests or questions.
