Subspecialty Services
Our group provides for all of the anatomic and clinical pathology services within Orlando Regional Healthcare, as well as providing services to many local surgery centers and outpatient offices.
Cytopathology
The Cytopathology Department at ORMC employs 3 ASCP registered Cytotechnologists with combined experience of over 60 years. A board certified cytopathologist provides Directorship for the Cytopathology Department and is available for evaluating cytology specimens. Almost 6,000 Pap Smears are evaluated each year using superior ThinPrep technology. This allows optimal evaluation of the cells present while minimizing background blood and inflammation. If atypical cells are seen, HPV DNA analysis is available through our reference laboratory, the Mayo Clinic, and can be ordered up to 3 weeks after specimen collection. We provide excellent turn-around-time for Pap Smear results, with reports being issued within 6 days for 99% of our cases.
ThinPrep technology is also available for non-gynecologic specimens such as Fine Needle Aspirations, Brushings, Washings, and various Body Fluids. Our superb turn-around-time for > 99% of non-gyn cases is 2 days or less.
Dermatopathology
A board certified Dermatopathologist is available for evaluating skin lesions. Dermatopathology services also include on-site frozen section diagnosis for margin evaluation and Direct Immunofluorescence for diagnosis of vesicular/bullous diseases. Electron microscopy is also available in-house for cases where epidermolysis bullosa or Langerhans cell histiocytosis is in the differential.
Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology
A fellowship trained GI/Liver pathologist is available to evaluate GI tract and liver specimens. In addition, our Pediatric pathologist is also available for pediatric GI/Liver specimens. For GI tract carcinomas, we offer on-site evaluation by image analysis technology for the molecular prognostic/therapeutic markers MLH-1, MSH-2, MSH-6, Ki-67, p53, p21, p27, and thymidylate synthase.
Gynecologic
A world-renowned expert in Gynecologic Pathology is available for in-house consultations. Besides offering excellent service for routine Pap smears, our pathologists review thousands of gynecologic biopsy and surgical specimens each year, including many oncologic gynecology cases. On-site frozen section diagnostic services are available and performed often at all hospitals within the ORHS system.
Hematopathology
Two board certified hematopathologists provide consultation for hematology, coagulation, and flow cytometry cases. In addition to numerous tissue and fine needle aspirate specimens, over 800 bone marrow aspirate and biopsy cases are reviewed each year. An extensive panel of immunohistochemical stains is available in house for use in hematopathology cases. Cytogenetic and molecular studies are done routinely through our reference lab, Genzyme/Impath, which provides excellent turn-around-time and consultative services when needed.
See also Flow Cytometry.
Neuropathology
A board certified neuropathologist with over 20 years experience provides consultation for CNS/brain biopsy specimens with a 24-48 hour turn-around-time for most cases. Frozen section evaluation for both adult and pediatric brain biopsies is done routinely within the ORHS hospital system. In addition, over 180 muscle biopsies and 40 nerve biopsies, including many outside consult cases, are processed and diagnosed each year. Ancillary immunohistochemical stains and electron microscopy are available on site. Reports with digital photographs are provided. Consultation for post-mortem examination of brain and spinal cord cases is also available.
Pediatric Pathology
A board certified pediatric pathologist provides consultation for pediatric surgical specimens and placentas as well as for pediatric autopsy cases. Cytogenetics and molecular studies are available through our reference laboratory, Genzyme/Impath, which provides excellent turn-around-time and consultative services when needed. Pediatric muscle biopsies are processed and diagnosed in house with ancillary immunohistochemical stains and electron microscopy available on site. Electron microscopy is also available for evaluation of abnormal cilia brushings to look for evidence of dysmotility or immotile cilia syndrome.
Renal Pathology
Kidney biopsy specimens are analyzed in house, including electron microscopy studies performed within our own EM laboratory. Biopsy specimens are received from locations both within and outside of the ORHS system. Six full-time pathologists with experience in renal pathology are on staff, assuring daily availability of consultation and biopsy interpretations of adult and pediatric cases.
